How Is Esther’s Megillah Written?

Posted by on Feb 27, 2012 in Purim | 0 comments

Megillat Esther or The Book of Esther is part of the third section of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible).  The original manuscript was written by Esther’s uncle Mordecai.  It was added to the Tanakh by the Great Assembly in the third or fourth century BCE. Esther’s Megillah or scroll is written by scribes on vellum or parchment made from the hide of a kosher animal. Kosher ink is mixed. According to the Pen Lovers Network, the recipe for kosher ink involves mixing gum arabic, copper or iron sulfate, oak galls, water, and coal soot.  Feathers from kosher birds are used to make quills. Misadventures In Baking: Homemade Poppy Seed Hamantashen

Posted by on Feb 23, 2012 in Purim | 2 comments

Published in The Philadelphia Jewish Voice When the Jewish holidays arrive, I sometimes reminisce about my grandmother Devorah, who I loved dearly. My children never met her.  This Purim, I decided to bake her poppy seed hamantashen.  This is my way of sharing with my kids what it was like to be with her.  The recipe comes from one of her favorite cookbooks, A Taste of Tradition, by Ruth Sirkis.  This book was published in 1972, and is considered an Israeli classic. Esther’s Story: The Most Lavishly Illustrated Purim Book

Posted by on Feb 20, 2012 in Purim | 0 comments

Esther’s Story is wonderfully recounted by Diane Wolkstein. She brings Esther to life, with her fears, doubts, and ultimate strength.  For me, what really sets this book apart are the illustrations.  Juan Wijngaard takes us to ancient Persia, to experience life in the walled city of Susa. Mr. Wijngaard illustrates the richness of the fabrics, the beautiful tiles, and the intricate wood carvings, and beautiful gardens of King Achashverosh’s palace.  He reimagines Queen Esther’s exotic beauty and King Achashverosh’s regal bearing.  Children who are too young to read will love this book’s lavish artwork.  You may begin reading the book...

Creative Claymation Purim Rock Opera

Posted by on Feb 19, 2012 in Purim | 0 comments

The most engaging way I found to tell the Purim story is with Scopus Films’ Purim Rock!  Colorful claymation and original songs recount the miraculous salvation of Persia’s Jews.  Here is a clip from the film in which Haman demands that Mordechai bow down to him. Here is a clip showing the plot to kill King Achashverosh: Mordechai writes Queen Esther a letter, telling her of the plight of Persia’s Jews. As a result, Queen Esther risks her life and approaches the king: I can’t recommend this movie enough!  You may purchase it online.  You will be humming it to yourself throughout...
