Published in The Philadelphia Jewish Voice   It is a mitzvah to give gifts to the poor during Sukkot.  Which type of gift?  The farmers of Ancient Israel were required to give a tithe, ma’aser, of their harvest (Numbers 18:21-24) to the Levites.  This harvest consisted of wheat, barley, oat, spelt, and rye.  In addition, they had to give a tithe of their production of wine, olive oil, fruit, and cattle.  In modern times, most of us live in cities.  How can we fulfill this mitzvah? According to mezuzah.net, a mezuzah is required on the doorpost of every room in a Jewish home in the following cases: Permanence This is the family’s home the majority of the time. Structure The design of the room includes walls to enclose it, a door, and a ceiling. Door The doorway is constructed in such a way that it has two doorposts.  It must be at least 4 handbreadths (1 foot, 4 inches) wide and 10 handbreadths (3 feet, 4 inches) tall.  It must have a lintel. Sukkot Song To Enjoy

My favorite song for sukkot was composed by “the first lady of Israeli song and poetry,” Naomi Shemer. She was born on kibbutz Kvutzat Kinneret by the Sea of Galilee.  She wrote songs and poems, and composed her own music.  She set the words of famous poets to music as well.  Naomi Shemer wrote a beautiful song called “Shlomit Bona Sukkah” or “Shlomit is building a sukkah.”  The lyrics and translation are at a site devoted to Hebrew songs.  You can hear this song in an old Israeli Television recording.  This song expresses Shlomit’s wish to live in a sukkah of...
